Mexico is showing its rejection of the US "abstinence only" approach to the drug war, saying that decriminalizing small amounts of drugs, even cocaine and heroin, will allow the police to focus on the real criminals and not small time users. It's hoped this bill will also end the common practice of police letting people with small amounts of drugs go free in exchange for a bribe. The odd part to me is that it remains completely illegal to sell drugs to anyone, even in the amounts listed as allowable for personal consumption. What does everyone think this will mean for US-Mexico relations and drug policy in the Americas?
